Yes, like any industry it has its pros and cons, but overall it’s a very unique career. This industry definitely keeps you on your toes by being very creatively challenging and changing daily. We also have perks! Such as creating fantasies, and meeting interesting people from around the world. Traveling for shoots, learning tricks that most hairstylists or makeup artists wouldn’t be exposed to, and the list goes on.
However, with that said, I’ve noticed a highly competitive nature that causes professionals to lose their integrity. Unfortunately, I’ve heard and witnessed unacceptable behavior. I myself have said or done things I regret. But I speak about this in the hope to shed light on a topic for those who work in the business, and for those who may have a goal of being a part of this world someday.
Instead of tearing each other down, I hope we can all build each other up. There’s enough pressure just from running a show, keeping our jobs, and upholding the industry standards. Let’s instead help each other, and let our egos go. Of course, we won’t always get along, but we can at least have mutual respect for one another.
At the end of the day, this is a job, not a high school hangout session. I think this tends to be forgotten because our industry is so laid back. I’m not saying we can’t enjoy ourselves but know how to read a room and remember there’s a time and a place.
When it comes to your team, when your authority tells you to do something, do it differently, or give detailed instructions. I know we all get tired, cranky, PMS, etc.. but let’s take responsibility for ourselves and learn to read it in and apologize when we need to. And PLEASE don’t start and get caught up in gossip, especially when you don’t even know if it’s true. We have the people we trust and can vent to when we are frustrated but to spread gossip just for the sport of it is so disgusting and disappointing.
